The templating and design of the Harpur College Academic Advising website
has been validated by the validation tools made available by the W3C. We
make every attempt to produce valid CSS and have design which is accessible
by all platforms. This site has been cross-platform checked on Linux, OSX
and Windows platforms, and renders in Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Firefox,
Opera, Netscape and Konqueror. The lightweight design also permits viewing
on cellular phones, PDA platforms and alternative browsers.
Accessible Pages for the Visually Impaired
We strive to have accessible pages for our students and users who are visually impaired. We operate using our understanding of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, and provide (1) alternative text-only pages and (2) alternative code in our graphical pages that comply with web accessibility standards. As additional measures, we offer font enlargement on each page, and top-level links to text only versions of each page. Our text-only engine permits the use of enlarged fonts and high contrast viewing according to user preference or need. Our pages have also been designed with a hierarchical structure and menuing layout which make them screen-reader friendly. We also use accessibility technologies in our developing tools to test our pages before posting. If you experience any trouble accessing our pages, please let us know.
Older Browsers
This website uses CSS (cascading style sheets), in compliance with current W3C standards, in part to make pages more accessible to screen readers and instruments used by the visually impaired. CSS is a current web standard, which renders correctly on all current web browsers, and most browsers to 2002. Older versions of Netscape (in particular), still prominent on campus due to their original installation for Oracle, often cannot render our pages (and others) adequately. Because of the age of browsers prior to 8, we cannot support older Netscape versions. The current version of Netscape, a Mozilla-based browser (8.0), will render pages correctly.
Please note that many standard HTML functions of previous browser versions have been deprecated, in favor of more accessible technologies.
Netscape Browser release dates are as follows:
- 1.0 - Dec 1994
- 1.1 - Apr. 1995
- 2.0 - Mar. 1996
- 3.0 - Aug. 1996
- 4.0 - Jun. 1997
- 4.5 - Oct. 1998
- 6.0 - Nov. 2000
- 7.0 - Aug. 2002 (Beginning at 7.1, partial CSS and CSS2 was supported)
- 8.0 - Jan 2006

Because of the advances in security, spyware protections, and intrusive ad protection, you are strongly encouraged to upgrade your browser, or use the latest version of Internet Explorer (included in Windows Operating Systems) or Safari (included in OSX). If you do not wish to use a current browser, you can always use our TEXT ONLY version of the site.
PDF Files
PDF file formats are constantly advancing. We make every attempt to make our PDF documents as compatible as possible, however we cannot support PDF versions 4.0 and earlier due to their reduced accessibility to the visually impaired (the current version is 7.0). At least Acrobat Reader / Acrobat 5.0+ is recommended for the best viewing result. You can download the newest Adobe Reader free of charge.
Notes:
See the standards on deprecated features: "In general, authors should
use style sheets to achieve stylistic and formatting effects rather than
HTML presentational attributes. HTML presentational attributes have been
deprecated when style sheet alternatives exist."
