When interacting with the advising office there are a few things to note:
What we will not do.
If any of the following incidents occur, contact the Advising Office, and Binghamton University Police immediately.
- Harpur advising will not solicit personal or identifiable information over email. If someone claims to be from the academic advising office and requests identifiable information (e.g. social security numbers, address, student numbers, PACs) do not provide it.
- Harpur Advising will not call you and solicit personal or identifiable information without a request from you. If someone calls you claiming to be an academic advisor, and you did not request the call or make contact with us, do not provide the information.
- Harpur Advising will not request your social security number or PAC via any of our websites or website applications. If you arrive at a web page claiming to be a Harpur Advising form or site requesting this information, do not provide it.
Harpur Advising may request your address, email address and details of a particular request, but at no point will we request:
- Credit Card Information
- Your Social Security number
- Partial Digits of Your Social Security Number
- Your PAC (The BUSI System, an official University application does require your SSN and PAC).
Your Rights as a Student and Advisee
The following are your rights as a student and advisee in our office.
You have the right to refuse to use your Social Security number on Harpur
Advising petitions and internal forms (including our walkin sheets). We do
not collect SSN's or PAC's by other means (web sites, web forms, or email).
You have the right to refuse to use your social security number in conversations
with us in person or on the phone, even if you have verified its legitimate
use, and/or have verified our status as advisors.
You have the right to expect the advising office to comply with the Federal Education Right to Privacy Act (FERPA). FERPA obligates us to guard your academic information in a variety of ways. FERPA applies to all schools receiving funds from the Federal Government & the U.S. Department of Education.
Parents can receive more information on student rights and FERPA in our parents area.
Online Applications
You have the right to refuse to use any of our online applications. We can provide you with paper forms; or you can meet with us personally to resolve issues that are addressed on many online forms (e.g. DARS form, email form...). In many cases we provide instant alternatives on the website (e.g. printable forms versus typeable forms).
If you have your directory information restricted, wish your file to be removed from any online system, or wish to opt out of using any online program in which you are currently registered, you may do so by contacting the webmaster.
If You are Not Sure
If you are not sure that a form or online application is a legitimate University or Harpur Advising application, DO NOT USE IT. For verification purposes, all of our applications can be found at the following addresses:
http://harpur-advising.binghamton.edu

If BINGHAMTON.EDU is not on the URL, you will want to verify it's official status. You may contact Thom Hanford personally to request verification of Harpur Advising sites, and the Computing Center for other University sites.
