The Harpur College academic advising office serves over 7,000 students representing each of three Arts and Sciences divisions, Humanities, Science and Mathematics, and Social Sciences. In working with students, Harpur College relies on a dual advising structure. Harpur advisors share academic counseling responsibilities with departmental advisors, who specialize in issues related to the major. Harpur advisors are generalists, advising students on academic decisions outside of the major, notably the general education curriculum requirements and degree planning.
The advising staff consists of five generalists, as well as one pre-health and two pre-law specialists. The staff is highly experienced with more than 70 years of advising experience earned at universities across the Northeast and Midwest. The advising office is a dynamic place in which to work. Over the last twelve months, staff members devised additional interactive on-line student resources, most notably a greatly expended web site (http://harpur-advising.binghamton.edu), a peer advising program, and new workshops and outreach programs designed to bring advising to students in the residence halls and elsewhere.
Student outreach is a significant aspect of staff responsibilities. The office is in the process of expanding these efforts. In so doing, the office works closely with the professional staff and student assistants employed by the university Discovery program (http://discovery.binghamton.edu/). The office has offered an experimental section of a two-credit class, “Academic Planning for Success,” designed to introduce Harpur students to the nature and value of liberal arts and degree planning. Student feedback was very positive.
